Publisher’s Synopsis:
“Eve has a good life. She wakes up each day, kisses her husband Nate, and heads off to teach math at the local high school. All is as it should be. Except…
Last year, Caseham High was rocked by a scandal involving a student-teacher affair, with one student, Addie, at its center. But Eve knows there is far more to these ugly rumors than meets the eye.
Addie can’t be trusted. She lies. She hurts people. She destroys lives. At least, that’s what everyone says.
But nobody knows the real Addie. Nobody knows the secrets that could destroy her. And Addie will do anything to keep it quiet…”
My Review:
The reigning queen of popcorn thrillers does it again!
Although I didn’t enjoy this one as much as some of her other books, it was still a solid three-star read for me.
I think my main issue with this story was how uncomfortable the content made me while reading it. Trigger warnings for inappropriate relations with and grooming of minors.
The first half of the book was a bit slow, and it was heavily focused on these themes in a way that I really didn’t like. It just gave me the ick and I didn’t enjoy reading about it.
I also never really liked or connected with the two POV characters. I found them both to be insufferable at times.
In typical McFadden fashion, it has a wild, twisty ending, if a little far-fetched.
Overall, it was just an okay read for me. She has definitely written better ones.
If you’re new to the author, I’d recommend starting with something else. If you’re an avid reader of McFadden’s books, then I’d say it’s still worth a read, but I wouldn’t expect a favorite out of it.
