Publisher’s Synopsis:
“When Hazel Sharp, daughter of Mirror Lake’s longtime local detective, unexpectedly inherits her childhood home, she’s warily drawn back to the town—and people—she left behind almost a decade earlier. But Hazel’s not the only relic of the past to return: a drought has descended on the region, and as the water level in the lake drops, long-hidden secrets begin to emerge…including evidence that may help finally explain the mystery of her mother’s disappearance.”
My Review:
I just love Megan Miranda. I’ll read everything she writes. She really has a way of crafting a story that hooks you in and keeps you going.
This one in particular has suspense and secrets galore!
I loved the ominous tension, small-town atmosphere, and unreliability of all the characters. I was immersed in the setting, felt connected to the main character, and totally invested in the outcome.
I love her writing style, the short chapters make it feel like a fast-read and the little cliffhangers she drops make you constantly want to keep going.
This one was quite a slow-burn and you really don’t find anything out until the very, very end. It kept me guessing until the last twenty pages or so. There are enough smaller reveals throughout the story to keep you engaged and intrigued and constantly flipping your perceptions.
I buddy-read this and it was really fun chatting at certain points to discuss theories.
I think the biggest thing that hindered this story (for me personally) was the lack of multiple perspectives or timelines. That’s something that I really love in a thriller and it adds so much more depth and intrigue. It’s also something I find that this author does really well. (Her previous release from last year being a prime example.) I think this story could have benefited from this narrative choice.
While not a perfect five for me, it was a solid four-star and I highly recommend!
