Synopsis:
In the aftermath of World War II, the underbelly of London is thriving where the rest of the nation is struggling to survive. Alice Diamond is the Queen of Thieves, a female gang of hoisters who make their living stealing from posh shops. Nell is a pregnant runaway, trying to find a way to live life on her own terms, away from the oppression of men and expectations of proper society.
Review:
While not my typical genre, I absolutely loved this story. It’s a fascinating adventure into the lives of people during such a dark and uncertain time period. The voice of the writing is exceptional and truly transports you into this time and place. I felt like I was along for the ride and was deeply invested in Nell’s transformation.
We get to live vicariously through the characters in a life of passionate crime and the glittering opulence it affords them. At times heartbreaking, this story depicts the stark realities of what women were up against.
The themes of women empowerment are strong. While most people’s ideas of gangs will immediately conjure men in suits, this is an interesting take on another side of that lifestyle. I enjoyed rooting for the character’s independence and freedom to choose their own path.
Reading this is a fun, courageous, absorbing, tenacious, and fierce experience and I highly recommend it to readers of all genres. I’m definitely looking forward to reading more from this author.
